To add a little flair to an everyday casual white top and blue jeans outfits, my go-to is the long cardigan (you may also have heard it being referred to as a duster). Long cardigan lengths will vary with some hitting anywhere below the knee or just a few inches above the floor. The sweet spot for me is somewhere in the middle, about mid-calf or above the ankles. If you’re new to the long cardigan style, it may seem a little out of your comfort zone. I have to tell you how much I love this style and that it’s actually so easy to pull off. Once you get your hands on this longline open cardigan, it’ll start becoming your go-to piece to throw on for running errands or to a casual dinner.
I’ll be partnering with Nordstrom today to share styling tips for what to wear with a long cardigan plus my latest accessorizing obsession below! Hope you guys enjoy!
Outfit Details: Caslon Cozy V-Neck Ribbed Top (sized down 1 – xs) // Leith Longline Open Cardigan (small) // Jeans (similar) // Bag // Quay Sunglasses // Booties (on sale!)
Styling tips just below! But I wanted to really quickly talk about how much I love the design details of this cardigan. First, I’m in love with the two side slit details. The dropped shoulder seams make the fit look more relaxed, while the shawl collar keeps it elegant and stylish. I’m also always a huge fan of ribbed cuffs. I’m wearing a small and it hits about mid-calf on me. For reference, I’m 5’6.5″.
What to Wear with a Long Cardigan
- Top: since there is already so much fabric with the long cardigan, I recommend staying away from heavy, thick-knit fabrics. Otherwise, there will be a lot going on and it won’t look super flattering. The idea of ‘less is more’ applies here. So instead, something like a simple white top will be perfect. I’m wearing this long sleeve v-neck top. It’s a lightweight fleecey material and it’s the softest thing ever! Perfect for layering. For spring, you can do a basic v-neck or crewneck tee. Bodysuits are also a great option to wear under long cardigans.
- Bottoms: with a long cardigan, you can’t go wrong with leggings and skinny or straight leg jeans. I do love a good pair of distressed jeans. When you’re wearing all solids, I like that it breaks up the color with the distressing and rips. My exact jeans aren’t available, but I’ve linked similar pairs.
- Shoes: you can pair this cardigan with flat shoes, but I think adding a little bit of height with a heeled bootie is more flattering. I’m wearing my favorite booties here. Plus, they’re on sale!
How to Wear Multiple Dainty Earrings
The long cardigan is already a good statement piece on its own, but you can never go wrong with adding jewelry. My latest obsession are dainty earrings and ear cuffs. I have two piercings on my ears so for those, I like to wear little dainty hoops like this one and this one. As for the ear cuffs, they just clip on and they’re so cute. My ears are shaped wide at the top so I wear them closer to the hoop earrings. You can wear it lower, more towards the middle of your ear, or wherever you prefer! If you wear them higher up and they feel a little loose, the ear cuffs do have a little give so you can make them a bit tighter by giving it a little squeeze. Just make sure it’s not constricting your ear and that it feels comfortable. I’ll wear the hoops on both ears and the cuffs on just one side. I saved a highlight to my Instagram stories if you want to see the earrings up close.
