Hi friends! As we are all faced with working from home, some may welcome the idea while others struggle not going to an office. Since I have worked at home for many years, I thought I would share some tips that work for me and may work for you as well!
Try to stay with your normal routine as much as possible.
If that meant waking up at 5am to get to the office, then take advantage of being able to work from home and sleep a tiny bit later but not by much! My alarm goes off at 5:45am Monday through Friday.
Make time to exercise.
I typically go to Barre classes throughout the week, but in our current situation, I will go for a run in our neighborhood or lift weights etc. instead. So still trying to follow my normal schedule, but just making small adjustments. If you have stairs in your house, another good exercise I like to do is adding weights to my ankles and do sets, running up and down the stairs.
Have days where you get dressed.
Meaning don’t stay in your workout clothes or lounge set. I will stay in my robe to drink coffee and eat breakfast while checking emails etc., but I make sure I am in my robe no more than 1 hour each morning. At that point, I usually go work out and then come home to shower and get dressed for the day. I usually will stay in my workout clothes on Mondays, and then one other day of the week I will wear a lounge set. Obviously Sat and Sun during the day I will be in workout clothes or a lounge set as well.
Have an office!
Even if it is a make shift one. Do not use your kitchen table as your “office”. Before we moved into this house I had a bad habit of doing that and I can’t tell you what a difference mentally it makes to have your own space away from where you spend family time, eat food etc. So if you have a guest room or a room you do not sleep in to set up that would be ideal.
Once you designate a space as your work from home office area, take some time to decorate it whether it’s by placing your favorite candle on your desk, hanging up pictures/artwork, etc. Make it cozy and yours!
Eliminate as many distractions as possible.
It’s easy to turn on a Netflix episode to use as background noise then finding yourself getting distracted. Other less distracting options could be a podcast, music or maybe complete silence works better for you. Use this time as a trial and error to find out what type of WFH environment works best for you.
In the meantime, with the boys being at home, I’ll be working on a blog post to share a list of free learning resources for the kids. This is un-chartered territory that we are all in so give yourself some time to adjust to this new schedule. If you have any tips you’d like to share, drop it in the comments!
xo, Jaime
